A district court in Cyprus has ordered a 37-year-old British auditor to pay a €3,000 fine following the tragic death of his two-year-old son, who fell from the fourth-floor window of a five-star hotel in Paphos. Joshua Foster formally admitted to causing death through a reckless or rash act during the court proceedings.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 12, marking the very first day of the family's holiday at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort. According to testimonies presented in court, Foster allegedly placed the toddler on a windowsill to show him a view of an outdoor waterpark, mistakenly believing the window was securely closed. The child slipped and fell nearly 40 feet, sustaining fatal injuries.
Presiding District Judge Froso Christodoulidou stated that the tragedy stemmed from a "momentary error" that generated a perilous situation with devastating results. However, the judge acknowledged there was no evidence that the defendant deliberately exposed the minor to danger, adding that the personal psychological consequences of losing a child far outweigh any judicial penalty.
Defense counsel Alexandros Alexandrou sharply criticized the legal process, asserting that the case should "never gone to court." The lawyer emphasized the emotional toll inflicted on his client, who was held in custody for eight days immediately following the accident, allegedly robbing him of the initial space needed to grieve alongside his family.
