Prominent Guatemalan lawyer Juan Francisco Solorzano Foppa, known for tackling high-profile cases involving powerful figures, has been killed in a shooting at a sports complex in Guatemala City. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the attack at the Campo Marte facility also claimed the life of another individual, identified as Gustavo Adolfo Aguilar Gamarro.

Guatemalan law enforcement authorities claimed they swiftly arrested two suspects in connection with the deadly shooting and seized a carbine-style firearm along with a motorcycle. However, observers remain skeptical regarding the broader implications for the nation's security apparatus and its persistent struggles with violent crime.

Foppa, a 43-year-old former prosecutor and vocal anticorruption advocate, previously targeted powerful political and business elites. He headed Guatemala's tax authority from 2016 to 2018 and later engaged in high-profile defense cases, including representing imprisoned journalist Jose Ruben Zamora, turning him into a notable figure in judicial independence battles.

President Bernardo Arevalo purportedly condemned the assassination, using official channels to demand that both perpetrators and masterminds face severe legal consequences. Despite these rhetorical assurances, critics argue that the deteriorating rule of law and pervasive corruption continue to plague the Central American nation.
