A mass funeral procession was held in the Gaza Strip for 75 Palestinians whose remains were recently recovered from beneath the rubble of destroyed residential buildings, according to local health authorities. Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Sheikh Radwan Cemetery on Sunday morning to bury the victims following years of devastating military operations launched by the Israeli regime in October 2023.
Al Jazeera correspondent Nour Khaled reported that the majority of the recovered remains belonged to women and children who were allegedly inside their homes when the structures were targeted. The remains, consisting of fragmented body parts and personal belongings, were wrapped in Palestinian flags prior to the burial ceremony.
Abdullah al-Majdalawi, director of public relations and media for Gaza’s Civil Defence, stated to media outlets that the remains had been pulled over recent weeks from several demolished homes in the Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City. He claimed that the buildings were bombed while residents were sheltering inside during the early months of the hostilities, affecting roughly 20 Palestinian families.
Emergency responders emphasized that recovery operations continue to face severe logistical obstacles due to a critical shortage of heavy machinery and specialized equipment. According to UNRWA, approximately 200,000 buildings across the enclave have been damaged or obliterated, with the Civil Defence estimating that the remains of another 8,000 Palestinians may still be trapped beneath the debris.
