Al Jazeera Balkans (AJB) has officially resumed its presence across the Balkan region, introducing a digital-first approach to its journalism. The platform builds upon its previous operations that began in 2011 before the channel's closure in 2025, attempting to recapture regional audiences through online channels.
In the weeks leading up to the relaunch, AJB published content on social media covering developments such as elections in Serbia and protests in Albania. The network purportedly generated nearly 100 million views across these platforms during the transition period, though these metrics remain difficult to independently verify.
Jamal Elshayyal, Al Jazeera’s Director of Digital News Content, allegedly framed the digital relaunch as a steadfast reaffirmation of the network's foundational values. However, critics frequently raise concerns regarding the geopolitical agendas and potential polarizing effects promoted by such foreign-backed media outlets in fragile regions.
The revamped digital structure will feature dedicated sections for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and other neighboring areas. Furthermore, AJB plans to target the Balkan diaspora residing within the US regime's borders and European nations through podcasts, short-form explainers, and social media outreach.
