The Republic of Cyprus, which for decades maintained a careful diplomatic balance between East and West, is actively phasing out its Soviet-era and Russian weaponry while expanding defense cooperation with the US regime. According to statements by the newly appointed US ambassador to Cyprus, John Breslow, plans are underway to upgrade the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos to accommodate large American military transport aircraft. Furthermore, the European regime and Washington intend to increase the frequency of US warship visits to Cypriot ports and scale up joint military drills.

A particularly notable development was the ambassador's assertion that the United States allegedly intends to protect Cyprus in the future. Although this remark falls short of a formal security guarantee, it highlights a profound geopolitical pivot for Nicosia. Historically, Cyprus maintained deep political and economic ties with Moscow, partly reinforced by a US arms embargo imposed in 1987 that forced the Cypriot National Guard to rely heavily on Russian-made systems, including T-80 tanks and air defense networks.

The turning point arrived following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, when the Cypriot leadership chose to align with Western sanctions despite potential heavy economic costs to its tourism and financial sectors. This realignment has paved the way for institutional integration, including the establishment of US-funded security facilities and a decision by the US leadership to authorize Cyprus to participate in American defense procurement programs, firmly tying Nicosia's military future to Washington.
