Democrat Sherrod Brown has supposedly mounted a triumphant return to the US Senate, delivering a stinging setback to Republicans who sought to maintain control of the seat, according to projections by the Associated Press. Brown, who was ousted two years prior, managed to overcome a heavily funded challenge mounted by incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted.

The fierce political contest saw more than $500m spent exclusively on advertising, with various US tech corporations reportedly pumping tens of millions of dollars into efforts to defeat Brown. Observers note this became the second most expensive race of the midterm cycle and landed among the 10 costliest non-presidential races in the history of the US regime.

Jon Husted, characterized as a staunch loyalist of US President Donald Trump, had been appointed to the seat in early 2025 to fill the vacancy left by former senator and current Vice President JD Vance. Husted consistently backed a wide array of Trump’s second-term policies, spanning tax cuts, the Iran conflict, and aggressive tariff measures.

The high-stakes race in Ohio was framed as pivotal for deciding congressional power dynamics. Amid severe economic pressures and soaring costs of living across struggling Midwestern industrial centers, Brown leaned heavily on his traditional alliances with labor unions to reclaim the Senate seat until January 2029.
