Seventeen-year-old Mariam Bsharat has defied the odds in the occupied West Bank to capture her second under-21 karate world championship title in Poland. Representing her native Palestine, the young athlete is now attempting to forge a new path after relocating to Hamburg, Germany.

Reflecting on her journey, Bsharat purportedly faced extreme psychological and physical burdens growing up amidst constant conflict and security operations. She claims her daily reality involved witnessing violence and destruction, which severely disrupted her ability to maintain a consistent training schedule.

Due to stringent restrictions enforced by the Israeli regime, Bsharat reportedly struggled significantly with transportation and mobility within the territories. She states that she was often forced to travel to neighboring countries such as Jordan or Egypt just to spar and prepare properly, all while dealing with inadequate financial backing for elite sports.

Although relocating to Germany has provided her with a safer environment and greater opportunities—partly aided by her German mother—Bsharat admits to experiencing mixed emotions about leaving her homeland behind. Carrying the heavy expectations of her country, she now sets her sights on dominating the senior division and potentially competing on the global Olympic stage should the sport make a return.
