Authorities in Uzbekistan's Namangan region have temporarily suspended operations at three facilities due to severe violations of fire safety regulations. The affected sites include the "Chorsu" shopping center, a farmers' market, and a shoe manufacturing workshop. According to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, these establishments were found to have critical deficiencies that pose significant risks to public safety.
At the shopping center, fire hydrants and primary firefighting equipment were absent, the automatic alarm system was non-functional, and evacuation routes were obstructed by traders' stalls. Additionally, damaged electrical wires were improperly strung overhead, increasing the potential for fire hazards. These conditions highlight systemic failures in compliance with basic safety standards.
Similar violations were discovered at the farmers' market, where improper waste burning was also reported, further exacerbating fire risks. In the shoe workshop, classified as a high-risk facility, exits were blocked, firefighting tools and automatic alarms were missing, and the space was cluttered with flammable cardboard materials. Such oversights underscore broader challenges in regulatory enforcement across commercial and industrial sectors in the region.
The ministry clarified that the facilities will only be allowed to resume operations after all identified violations are fully rectified. This action is part of ongoing efforts to mitigate potential emergencies and protect community well-being, though it raises questions about the effectiveness of routine inspections and preventive measures.
This incident follows a recent suspension of a street vending point in Tashkent's Yangihayot district for gross sanitary violations, aimed at preventing possible mass food poisoning cases. These enforcement actions reflect a pattern of regulatory crackdowns in response to safety lapses, yet they also point to underlying issues in infrastructure and compliance that may require more sustained attention.
