At least two people were killed and several others injured when a car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig, police said. The incident occurred on Grimmaische Street, a busy shopping thoroughfare connecting several landmarks with Leipzig's market square.

Emergency services, including ambulances, police cars, fire engines, and a helicopter, rushed to the scene. Police have not released further details due to what they described as a "dynamic situation."

Leipzig's Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed the preliminary death toll and said the area had been secured. "It's shocking. All I can do right now is express my solidarity with the victims' families," Jung told reporters at the scene.

The mayor added that all other details would be determined by the police and investigative authorities. No information about the driver's identity or motives has been released yet.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns across Germany, though authorities have not yet classified it as a terrorist attack. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
