Customs officers at Russia's Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk prevented the illegal transfer of currency by a foreign citizen traveling to Andijan, Uzbekistan. The 33-year-old passenger chose the 'green corridor,' declaring no goods to declare.
However, an X-ray inspection of his luggage revealed 2.8 million rubles (equivalent to $37,400). A criminal case has been opened on charges of large-scale cash smuggling.
The penalties under the article include a fine of 10 to 15 times the illegally transported amount or restriction of freedom for up to four years.
The Russian Federal Customs Service reminded that when crossing the border of the Eurasian Economic Union, cash amounts exceeding $10,000 must be declared in writing.
This is not the first such incident. Earlier, Novosibirsk customs officers prevented an attempt to illegally export 1.5 million rubles from Russia. That incident also occurred at the airport, with a passenger on the Novosibirsk-Fergana flight choosing the 'green corridor' without declaring the cash.
