The Russian government has initiated a reform of the citizen identification system. According to a new draft law, starting January 1, 2025, all new passports must include biometric data.
The measure is allegedly aimed at combating document forgery and enhancing state security. However, human rights activists express concerns over privacy intrusion and the strengthening of surveillance systems.
The new passports will contain fingerprints and a digital facial image. Holders of existing passports are not required to replace them until the 10-year validity expires, but biometrics will be mandatory for obtaining new documents.
Experts note that this reform will strengthen Russia's digital identification system but also increases the risk of data leaks. The authorities promise high standards of data protection.
