Academician Vadim Pokrovsky, one of Russia's most prominent specialists in HIV infection and AIDS prevention, has died at the age of 72.
His death was announced by Rospotrebnadzor on May 20, which noted that his contribution to the development of epidemiology and the study of HIV infection is of international significance.
Pokrovsky's name is closely linked to the development of Russia's HIV control system. He rose from clinical resident to head of a specialized research department for AIDS prevention and control, becoming a key expert in the field.
The scientist participated in investigating the first HIV outbreaks in the USSR and Russia, including nosocomial infections. He helped develop epidemiological control methodology that later formed the basis of the nationwide network of AIDS centers.
Pokrovsky led the scientific direction for over 40 years, authored hundreds of publications, monographs, and patents, and served on editorial boards of scientific journals and expert bodies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
