President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a law ratifying the agreement with Uzbekistan on joint management and rational use of transboundary water bodies.
The document provides for coordinated use of shared water resources and safe operation of water management facilities of interstate importance. To implement the agreements, the parties will establish a joint intergovernmental commission to deal with water management issues.
The agreement was signed on November 15, 2025 in Tashkent during the second meeting of the Supreme Interstate Council of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Ratification of the document is expected to strengthen coordination between the two countries in water distribution, reduce the risk of disputes, and increase the sustainability of water supply in regions dependent on the Syr Darya and related water management facilities.
Earlier, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan agreed to install ten automated hydrological posts for water accounting on transboundary sections of the Syr Darya, with five such posts in each country.
