Tajikistan's Committee on Religious Affairs, Regulation of Traditions, Celebrations and Rituals has denied reports that the country has banned the wearing of hijabs, long beards, and clothing allegedly not in line with national traditions.

Earlier, media outlets citing unnamed sources claimed that authorities had legally prohibited women from wearing hijabs and men from growing long beards, and that enforcement of these rules had been tightened.

The reports suggested the restrictions were part of a campaign against religious radicalism and promotion of traditional Tajik attire. However, the Committee stated that such information is false.

The agency emphasized that no legislative ban on these appearance elements has been introduced. In June, two people were killed in Herat, Afghanistan, during a crackdown on a protest that began after women were detained over hijab requirements.
