Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in an interview with Sky News that there is currently a "window of opportunity" to end the conflict before the US Congressional midterm elections.
Responding to a question about peace settlement prospects, Zelenskyy noted that the coming months could be decisive. He said that if an agreement is possible, conditions are favorable now.
The US Congressional midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, 2026, with all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 senators to be elected.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that Kyiv seeks to end hostilities but will not agree to deals with "humiliating" terms and is ready to reject an agreement if it proves disadvantageous for the country.
According to The Atlantic magazine, some of Zelenskyy's associates fear the opportunity for a deal is diminishing, and without an agreement this spring, the conflict could drag on for years. The publication also suggests that US President Donald Trump may withdraw from negotiations amid election preparations.
Zelenskyy believes that achieving a peace deal before the vote would be politically beneficial for Trump and could strengthen Republican positions.
