Russian health officials have reported high epizootic activity in a natural plague focus on the border between Russia and Mongolia. The Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection (Rospotrebnadzor) announced the findings.
The conclusions are based on laboratory studies conducted in 2026. The Sailyugem transboundary focus covers an area of about 29,000 square kilometers, with nearly 60% of it located in Mongolia.
Russian anti-plague institutions, together with Mongolia's National Center for Zoonotic Diseases, are regularly monitoring the area. In Russia, planned surveillance and vaccination of the population are ongoing, ensuring a stable sanitary and epidemiological situation.
The activation of the border focus is a systemic process of recent years. In 2023, at the 25th International Conference on Zoonotic Infections, Mongolian experts reported 137 natural plague foci in 17 provinces of the country.
The zones closest to Russia are in the northwestern Uvs province, bordering Tuva. According to joint studies by epidemiologists of both countries, increased activity in this area was also recorded in 2022.
