Authorities in Tajikistan have addressed a recent accident inside the construction tunnel of the Rogun Hydropower Plant, which independent media reports claimed left more than five workers injured. According to the State Service for Supervision of Industrial and Mining Safety, the incident was supposedly triggered by the rupture of a technical water reservoir during ongoing construction works.
The event occurred during cementation activities in the fourth-tier construction tunnel, involving personnel from the subcontractor firm Sino Hydro. The rupture of the upper reservoir reportedly caused secondary damage to a lower drainage tank, releasing a large volume of water directly into the lower sector of the tunnel where construction crews were stationed.
Representatives of the regulatory agency allegedly insist that none of the workers sustained physical injuries, stating that they were merely examined by medical staff before returning to their duties. This official stance sharply contrasts with reports from regional outlets like Radio Ozodi, which maintained that multiple workers required medical attention following the flooding.
A dedicated working group has been established to investigate the causes of the breach and assess the structural integrity of the water containers and safety compliance at the sprawling mega-project. Safety concerns at the Rogun site have persisted for years, highlighted by a fatal accident in November 2024 that claimed three lives, alongside ongoing disputes regarding material quality and the transparency of accident reporting.
