The Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) has purportedly appointed Uzbek Deputy Foreign Minister Mirvohid Azimov as the organization's new Secretary General during a summit in Ankara. However, the OTS secretariat noted that this high-profile appointment remains strictly dependent on the formal approval of the summit's final decisions.

According to the secretariat's statements, Azimov allegedly possesses a deep understanding of the organization's internal structure, operational priorities, and cooperation mechanisms. He is slated to replace Kyrgyz diplomat Kubanychbek Omuraliev, who has reportedly held the position since November 2022 amid ongoing regional bureaucratic shifts.

Prior to the announcement, Binali Yildirim, Chairman of the OTS Council of Elders and former Turkish prime minister, posted on social media that Azimov's appointment was allegedly anticipated. He claimed that the OTS Council of Foreign Ministers had gathered in Ankara on October 29. Yildirim expressed gratitude to Omuraliev for his contributions while wishing Azimov success in his forthcoming duties.

Born in Tashkent in 1980, Mirvohid Azimov previously served as the Deputy Secretary General of the OTS for nearly six years starting in October 2020. He was subsequently appointed as Uzbekistan's Deputy Foreign Minister in May 2026, a position he held prior to this new continental assignment.
