After purchasing a vehicle, the owner has 10 days to notarize the sale contract and register the car with the State Traffic Safety Service (GAI). Separate fines apply for late registration and driving without compulsory insurance (OSAGO).

Registering a used car costs approximately 6.5–7 million UZS, covering notary and GAI fees. Buying from a dealer eliminates the need for a notary, while registering an electric vehicle is nearly half the cost of a gasoline car.

The registration process consists of four steps: notarization of the contract (if buying from an individual), submitting an application to GAI, technical inspection, and obtaining documents. Notarization is not required when purchasing from a dealer, inheriting, or acquiring through a court decision.

Notary fees breakdown: state duty 105,000 UZS, Unified Notary Office service 105,000 UZS, notary legal/technical service 105,000 UZS, mandatory payment (PF) 105,000 UZS, voluntary payment 105,000 UZS. Total: 525,000 UZS.

GAI registration costs: for a gasoline car — 5,372,480 UZS (state duty 412,000 UZS, plastic plates 400,000 UZS, technical inspection 150,000 UZS, fee 4,410,480 UZS). For an electric car — 3,172,400 UZS (state duty 412,000 UZS, plastic plates 400,000 UZS, technical inspection 150,000 UZS, fee 2,210,400 UZS).

Applications can be submitted online via my.gov.uz. Personal attendance at GAI is only required for inspection and document collection. GAI may refuse registration due to forged documents, stolen vehicle, technical defects, or debts of the previous owner.

OSAGO insurance is mandatory for all vehicle owners. Driving without insurance incurs a fine of 1/2 BRV (206,000 UZS).
