The Tashkent city administration has unveiled plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of the city's central district, focusing on the street known as Broadway (Sayilgoh Street) and its adjacent areas. The project aims to enhance pedestrian infrastructure, promenade zones, green spaces, and create safe, inclusive public spaces.
The plan covers Sayilgoh Street, the adjoining boulevard, green areas, and pedestrian crossings. Urban infrastructure elements such as lighting, irrigation, and security systems will also be upgraded. The administration stated that the project is based on a “unified design code and principles of integrated territorial development,” and that proposals from residents and professional communities will be studied during preparation.
“The area will retain its open urban environment character. Street artists and creative community representatives will remain part of this space. The project's task is not to lose lively urban activity, but to regulate it, making the environment comfortable, accessible, and safe,” the administration added.
The project includes inspection of existing trees under specialist supervision and planting of at least 1,000 new trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. Broadway and the boulevard are separated by two underground crossings built in place of the former zebra crossings.
It is worth recalling that in March-April, the Amir Temur Square, where Sayilgoh Street begins, was reconstructed. However, the square ended up being separated from Broadway and surrounding sidewalks by underground passages. Previously, Gazeta called on the administration to restore convenient and safe (short and traffic-light-controlled) surface crossings to truly turn the city center into a pedestrian-friendly zone.
