The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced the launch of the FIDE Excellence Awards, a new biennial prize program designed to recognize key achievements in the global chess community. The inaugural ceremony will take place in September 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, during the 46th Chess Olympiad.

The awards will cover a wide range of participants, including players, federations, organizers, innovators, and projects that contribute to the development of chess. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich stated: “The award provides an opportunity to recognize people, organizations and initiatives that contribute to the growth and development of chess around the world.” He emphasized that contributions are evaluated not only by sporting results but also by work in education, media, innovation, and tournament organization.

Prizes will be awarded in six main and five additional categories. Main categories: Best Chess Player, Best Female Chess Player, Best Round-Robin Tournament, Best Open Tournament, Best Federation, and Best Chess Initiative. Additional categories: Best Team, Breakthrough of the Year, Comeback of the Year, Disabled Player of the Year, and Best Creator (Content Creator).

The selection process will consist of three stages: applications will be accepted from June 1 to June 30, 2026; then a jury will compile shortlists; finalists will be announced on July 15. Winners will be revealed at a gala ceremony in Samarkand. All members of the chess community can apply via the official award website. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2026.

Notably, in September 2026, Samarkand will also host the FIDE Congress, where elections for the organization's leadership will take place.
