President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced the launch of the targeted program ‘Yangi Hayot’ (‘New Life’), aimed at the social rehabilitation of women serving sentences. The initiative includes access to education, vocational skills training, and financial support to facilitate their reintegration into society.
The head of state announced the program on March 6 during a festive event at the Kuksaroy residence. The key objective is to assist women in returning to a full life after release. Under this initiative, convicts will be able to take entrance exams directly in correctional facilities, enroll in higher education institutions, and study through distance learning.
For those admitted to universities on a fee-contract basis, financial support in the form of interest-free loans is provided. Repayment of these funds will only be required after release and formal employment. A separate component of the program focuses on vocational training: women without a specialty will be offered short-term courses lasting from three to six months, after which they will receive state-standard certificates.
The President also emphasized that protecting women and children from oppression and violence remains one of the state’s strategic tasks. This week, a decree was signed to strengthen measures against any manifestations of violence, highlighting the government’s serious approach to this issue.
