Uzbekistan is taking a significant step in enhancing its road infrastructure. According to Asliddin Isayev, Director of the Avtoyo’linvest agency, in an interview with Uzbekistan 24 TV channel, practical work on the construction of the Tashkent-Andijan toll road will commence this year. The road will pass through the Kamchik Pass and is expected to drastically reduce travel time.
The first phase of the project involves building an alternative road from Tashkent to Angren and the Kamchik Pass, spanning 171 km at a cost of $3.66 billion. Concurrently, a new four-lane tunnel, 33 km in length, will be put into operation. The project is being implemented with assistance from the World Bank, and the international consulting company Arup has been engaged for full design and tender procedures.
The total length of the toll road will be 314 km, linking the capital with valley regions. Annual toll revenue is estimated at $465 million. Asliddin Isayev stated that major companies from France, Turkey, and China have shown interest in the project. The road is designed to be fully operational in adverse weather conditions, including rain and snow, with a primary goal of improving traffic safety.
Upon completion, travel time from Tashkent to Andijan is projected to decrease from the current 5–5.5 hours to 2–2.5 hours. The average daily traffic on this route is 40,000 vehicles, which could boost economic activity and tourism in the area.
