Under the “green belt” project aimed at strengthening Tashkent’s ecological sustainability, the “I Also Plant a Sapling” campaign took place on March 14 in the Bektemir district. The event involved the leadership of the capital’s city administration, representatives of various state organizations, and community activists. Gazeta journalist Mirolim Isajonov prepared a photo report from the campaign, extensively covering the process.

Prior to the event, under the leadership of Tashkent City Mayor Shavkat Umurzoqov, a video conference from the Bektemir district launched the campaign across the capital. According to the mayor, this initiative covered over 50 neighborhoods in 12 districts in just one day. Umurzoqov stated: “On the instruction of our respected president, we started building our city’s ‘green belt’ with tree planting this year. Today, each district mayor, together with activists in their area, is planting saplings with the goal of establishing one garden for every five neighborhoods.”

The mayor added that preparations for the campaign began last year, with the quality, height, thickness, and timing of the planted trees coordinated with specialists according to plan. He also emphasized that the land allocated for the “green belt” was decided to be used for creating a green area instead of being released for construction. The campaign was attended by Chairman of the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change Aziz Abduhakimov, as well as leaders and staff from the city administration, ecology, internal affairs, prosecutor’s office, tax committee, emergency management, National Guard, Department for Combating Economic Crimes, and other organizations.

According to information from the capital city administration’s information service, during the campaign, on 4.2 hectares out of 25 hectares allocated for the “green belt” in the Bektemir district, about 2,000 perennial tree saplings such as Crimean pine, poplar, elm, and sophora were planted. It was noted that the project to create the “green belt” in the district began in 2025, and over the past period, more than 10,000 saplings have been planted in this area. This process will continue until the end of the year, with each district planning to plant an average of 300 trees.
