The World Bank has approved a $200 million allocation to Uzbekistan for modernizing transport infrastructure and implementing comprehensive reforms in the sector, as reported by the bank's press service in Uzbekistan. The funds are designated for reconstructing a 91-kilometer section of the regional M41 highway in Surkhandarya Region, which connects Uzbekistan with Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan.

Under the project, the existing two-lane road will be expanded into a four-lane highway, expected to serve nearly 35,000 drivers and passengers daily. The bank notes that upon completion, approximately 550,000 residents in adjacent areas will gain broader access to transport services and economic opportunities, including business development and job creation.

Reconstruction works will finance improvements in road surface quality, enhanced traffic safety, and upgraded bus stop facilities. Additionally, around 180 bridges and drainage structures are planned for construction or renovation to mitigate flood risks. These measures aim to reduce road accidents and fatalities on the reconstructed section, cut travel time (with average speeds outside settlements rising from 65 km/h to about 90 km/h), and increase the reliability of passenger and freight transport.

The project also assists the Ministry of Transport in developing a national strategy for multimodal transport development and supports Uzbekistan Railways JSC in refining its business processes, such as strengthening corporate governance, increasing financial transparency, improving passenger service planning, and adopting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
