An unexpected change has occurred in Uzbekistan's mobile financial services sector. Users of popular payment applications noticed today, March 25, the disappearance of the function to specify the purpose of a transfer when making card-to-card (P2P) transactions. This functionality, which had sparked active discussions among citizens, is no longer displayed in the service interfaces.
The issue's history began in early March when the Central Bank of Uzbekistan instructed commercial banks and payment organizations to implement a mandatory selection of payment categories. According to initial requirements, the sender had to classify the transfer by choosing one of 16 items. This list included categories such as transfers to relatives, debt repayment, charity, payment for services, and food expenses.
On March 5, the regulator clarified its instructions. The Central Bank explained that fintech organizations could implement this functionality at their discretion, adapting it to the technical capabilities and internal policies of specific institutions. Despite the gained freedom of choice, many services maintained the mandatory 'payment purpose' field until this evening.
The sudden disappearance of the category system from applications currently remains without official comments from banks or fintech companies. The reasons why developers decided to abandon this tool precisely now are not disclosed. This change raises additional questions and speculation among users and experts, as it occurred during a period of discussion on financial transparency and targeted monitoring issues.
