The Committee on Family and Women's Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan has proposed a series of legislative amendments aimed at strengthening family relations and reducing divorce rates. According to a draft law published for public discussion on March 26, the reconciliation period granted by courts under Article 40 of the Family Code will be extended from the current six months to one year. This change is designed to provide families with more time to resolve mutual disagreements.
Additionally, with an amendment to the third part of the article, courts will be required to send information about assigned reconciliation periods through the "electronic government" system within three days. This innovation aims to enhance the transparency of judicial processes and ensure prompt notification of citizens.
The draft law also introduces a new requirement for the simplified divorce procedure by mutual consent of spouses without minor children through civil registry offices. Now, for such a simplified divorce, the marriage must have been registered for at least one year. However, this restriction does not apply to individuals who have suffered from domestic violence in the family, with an exception made to facilitate quick assistance.
Another significant aspect of the proposed changes relates to alimony payments. Under the current procedure, the minimum amount of alimony for each child must not be less than 26.5% of the minimum wage (currently 336,815 soums). In the new version, this indicator is changed to the amount of minimum consumer expenses (currently 715,000 soums), targeting the protection of children's rights and improvement of their material support.
The draft law will be discussed by the public until April 10, after which it is expected to be reviewed by parliament. These proposals are developed to reinforce family values and enhance social stability.
