The Competition and Consumer Rights Protection Committee has issued a warning to importers and sellers who are violating the requirements for registering IMEI codes of mobile devices. According to the committee, there has been a significant increase in complaints from consumers in 2025 regarding the need to re-register IMEI codes due to devices not being registered in the system. A total of 147 complaints were received, with 55 resolved positively, 89 addressed with legal explanations, and 3 forwarded to authorized bodies.
Under current legislation, providing consumers with complete and accurate information about goods, as well as ensuring the normal functioning of products, is mandatory. In accordance with the regulation approved by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 778, the obligation to register mobile devices in the IMEI registry falls on the manufacturer, importer, or seller. Violations of these requirements can lead to additional costs and issues for consumers, highlighting ongoing challenges in regulatory compliance.
The committee emphasized that imposing additional services on consumers is not allowed, and the registration of IMEI codes should not be the responsibility of the buyer. In retail trade, sellers are accountable for selling only registered devices. The warning stated that if importers or sellers violate the requirements and infringe on consumer rights, measures will be taken against them according to established procedures, reflecting efforts to tighten enforcement in this sector.
