The Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to UNESCO and the Cultural Heritage Agency held an online meeting with the Director of the World Heritage Centre, Lazare Eloundou Assomo, and heritage preservation expert-architect Sébastien Moriset from the CRATerre association, as reported by the Dunyo news agency.

During the talks, the parties discussed the development and implementation of a joint project to restore the Poi Kalon architectural complex in Bukhara. The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Historic Centre of Bukhara.” Both sides emphasized its high historical and cultural significance and expressed hope that the project could become a model of international cooperation.

CRATerre representatives confirmed their readiness to jointly develop and implement the restoration project, utilizing advanced international experience and modern techniques. The project aims to ensure the long-term preservation of the complex.

A key focus was placed on creating a comprehensive multi-year conservation plan. Special attention will be given to involving local specialists and enhancing their skills in restoration, conservation, and cultural heritage management.

Preliminary agreement was reached on a visit by CRATerre and UNESCO World Heritage Centre representatives to Uzbekistan. During the visit, the guests will examine the condition of Poi Kalon on site, consult with local experts, review the training system, and discuss project details in depth.

The Poi Kalon architectural complex comprises the Mir-Arab and Amir Olim Khan madrasas, as well as the Kalon minaret and mosque. CRATerre, founded in France in 1979, is a leading global research and application center for earthen architecture and serves as the executor of the UNESCO Chair on Earthen Architecture.
