In Karakalpakstan, more than 4,300 residents of remote areas have gained access to safe drinking water as part of a project for green and inclusive development of the Aral Sea region. This was announced following the second monitoring mission in May 2026, led by Yuri Boychenko, advisor to the Russian embassy.

The project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Uzbekistan's Ministry of Agriculture and the Council of Ministers of Karakalpakstan, with financial support from the Russian government.

A key facility is the modernized desalination plant in the village of Kuralpa, Karauzyak district. New treatment equipment with a capacity of 16 cubic meters per hour was installed, and about 12 km of water pipelines were laid, providing drinking water to over 1,500 local residents.

In Kegayli district, more than ten energy-efficient greenhouses with drip irrigation systems were installed for small farms. In Karauzyak district, a portable sprinkler system was introduced on 13.6 hectares, reducing irrigation water consumption by nearly half.

In livestock farming, the project covered the Arslan Sharua farm, where new feeding methods were introduced in cooperation with the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, increasing livestock productivity by 40%. Additionally, 8 hectares of degraded pastures were restored using Russian methods.

In Kanlykul district, funding was provided to expand a mini-bakery, creating permanent jobs for local women.

The previous monitoring mission took place in October 2025, when experts evaluated trials of water-saving rice varieties and the modernization of regional sanitary laboratories.
