A court in Namangan, Uzbekistan, has sentenced a local driver to six years in prison for fatally hitting a traffic police officer. The driver was found guilty of willfully disobeying lawful police orders, violating traffic rules resulting in death, and leaving a person in danger.
The tragic incident occurred in November last year during the night. The convicted driver, behind the wheel of an Onix car, was driving at a very high speed and ignored a traffic inspector's lawful order to stop. Police officers relayed information about the violator via radio to their colleagues at the next post.
Upon receiving the message, a traffic safety inspector stepped onto the roadway to stop the approaching vehicle. However, instead of slowing down, the driver struck the officer, who was performing his official duties. The inspector died from severe injuries sustained in the crash.
After reviewing the case, the court classified the driver's actions under Part 2 of Article 219 (Resistance to a Government Official), Part 2 of Article 266 (Violation of Traffic Safety Rules), and Part 2 of Article 117 (Leaving in Danger) of the Criminal Code. The man was sentenced to six years in prison and banned from driving any type of vehicle for three years.
Previously, the Chilanzar District Criminal Court in the capital sentenced the driver of a BYD Han who hit a traffic police officer on duty in 2024. The court found the driver guilty under Article 104, Part 2, Point 'b' (intentional grievous bodily harm in connection with the victim's performance of official duty) and Part 2 of Article 219 (resistance to a government official). Initially sentenced to six years, the final term was reduced to 5 years, 2 months, and 9 days, accounting for time already served in custody.
