The Tashkent city administration has denied rumors circulating on social media that the Sergeli car market is being demolished. According to the press service of the hokimiyat, planned construction, repair and landscaping works are currently underway at the market site.
The hokimiyat emphasized that the market continues to operate as usual. The goal of the ongoing work is to upgrade the market's infrastructure and create a safe, modern trading environment.
Currently, the following works are being carried out at the market: automated payment systems without human operators are being installed at the entrances to improve visitor convenience. According to the hokimiyat, this will make the entry process transparent and fast.
"These efforts are aimed at developing the area, improving conditions for entrepreneurs and creating a more comfortable environment for the capital's residents," the hokimiyat statement said.
The city administration urged citizens to rely only on official information and not to trust unconfirmed reports.
For reference, the official name of the complex is LLC "Sergeli Market of Used Vehicles and Spare Parts."
In June 2018, there were reports of plans to relocate the Sergeli (car) and Yangiobod markets to the Yukori Chirchik district of Tashkent region. At that time, the relocation was justified by the inconvenience caused to residents, as the market created traffic jams on the road connecting residential areas with the city center.
Subsequently, the then district governor Nozim Khusanov stated that he did not want the car market to be moved to the outskirts of Tashkent, noting that the market contributes 11 billion soums annually to the district budget.
By 2020, it became known that a new Car Box Service project for vehicle maintenance was planned on the site of the Sergeli car market. This decision was recorded in the protocol of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's administration following his visit to the Sergeli and Zangiota districts on May 29.
The document stated that Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Jamshid Kuchkarov and Finance Minister Timur Ishmetov were tasked with reviewing the calculations for the $32.2 million Car Box Service project within two weeks. However, the fate of the document remains unknown.
