Customs officers in Uzbekistan's Bukhara region, in cooperation with the State Security Service and border troops, foiled an attempt to illegally import drugs.
At the Olot customs post, nearly 13 kilograms of heroin were discovered in boxes of dried apricots. The incident occurred on May 30.
Officers stopped a truck traveling from Afghanistan to Russia. X-ray scans revealed suspicious objects inside boxes containing 18.6 tons of dried apricots.
During inspection, it turned out that 13 boxes contained prohibited substances hidden among the dried fruit, visually resembling apricots.
Expert analysis confirmed the substance as heroin with a total weight of nearly 13 kilograms. According to experts, the black market value of the batch could reach $1.5 million.
A criminal case has been opened and an investigation is underway. Since the beginning of the year, 363 attempts to illegally transport drugs have been thwarted in the country, with about 1.7 tons of prohibited substances seized — 461 kilograms more than in the same period last year.
Earlier, in Karakalpakstan, law enforcement detained a man suspected of selling heroin. He had hidden the drugs in a street toilet, concealed in a pill bottle.
