In Urgench, a city with over 53,000 children, only five full-time specialized doctors are employed. The city lacks a proper children's hospital, forcing thousands of young patients to seek help at the Khorezm Regional Multidisciplinary Children's Medical Center.
The issue was raised by Odiljon Mamatkarimov, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science, Education and Healthcare, during a session of the upper house of parliament. According to him, the shortage of specialized doctors creates a serious burden on the regional center, which serves not only Urgench residents but also the population of 13 districts and cities in the region.
Statistics confirm the scale of the problem. In 2024, Urgench residents made 47,503 outpatient visits to the regional center out of a total of 272,407, and in 2025, this figure was 44,183 visits out of 286,211.
Additionally, more than three thousand children under dispensary observation cannot receive timely inpatient treatment under preferential orders due to a shortage of beds.
To address the issue, the Urgench City Medical Association has developed a project to create its own medical facilities. Mamatkarimov called on the Cabinet of Ministers to consider the initiative and include in the state Infrastructure Development Program for 2027 the construction of a 50-bed children's department and an 8-bed pediatric intensive care unit. This is expected to provide specialized care to children directly in Urgench and reduce the burden on the regional medical center.
