According to the National Statistics Committee, at the start of the 2025/2026 academic year, 1.535 million students were enrolled in higher education institutions in Uzbekistan.
Compared to the previous academic year, this figure increased by 102,200 people, or 7.1%. Compared to the 2021/2022 academic year, the number of students nearly doubled – from 808,400 to 1.53 million.
Of the total students, 782,900 are women and 752,100 are men. Five years ago, 369,000 women (45%) were studying at universities.
At the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year, Uzbekistan had 215 higher education organizations, including branches. Over the year, their number decreased by 7.
Most universities are located in Tashkent – 98. Next are Tashkent region – 19, Samarkand region – 14, Republic of Karakalpakstan and Bukhara region – 11 each.
