Uzbekistan's chances of advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup have significantly diminished following Ecuador's 2-1 victory over Germany in Group E. Ecuador's win lifted them to third place in the group with 4 points, improving their standing among third-placed teams and intensifying the competition for additional spots.
According to World Cup regulations, the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the round of 16. Uzbekistan, after losses to Colombia and Portugal, has yet to earn a point and can no longer finish in the top two of Group K.
The only scenario for Fabio Cannavaro's side is to defeat DR Congo in the final group match and hope for favorable results in other groups. Given the current standings, Uzbekistan needs to win by at least four goals to improve their goal difference and keep their hopes of being among the best third-placed teams alive.
DR Congo has 1 point after two rounds, having drawn with Portugal and lost to Colombia. The decisive match between Uzbekistan and DR Congo will take place on June 28 in Atlanta, with kickoff at 04:30 Tashkent time.
Earlier, DR Congo coach Sebastien Desabre stated ahead of the match: "A draw will not be enough for us." According to him, after the loss to Colombia, his team will have to take risks.
