A court in Uzbekistan's Samarkand region has sentenced a local resident to nine and a half years in prison for driving his wife to suicide, Podrobno.uz reports.
According to case materials, the man systematically subjected his wife to physical violence. In court, he admitted to beating her with his hands and a metal jug.
Human rights organization Nemolchi.uz reported that the woman repeatedly tried to leave her husband and return to her parents. However, after intervention by mahalla representatives, she returned to the family each time.
Mahalla activists reportedly visited the couple and held preventive talks to resolve the family conflict. The woman's relatives also stated that she was restricted from communicating with loved ones and did not receive necessary medical treatment.
The tragedy occurred on July 2, 2025. According to the convicted man, during a conflict the woman threatened herself with a knife and sustained a fatal wound. The court found him guilty of driving his wife to suicide.
Nemolchi.uz stated that this case highlights the risks of reconciliation practices in situations where there are signs of domestic violence.
Previously, Podrobno.uz reported that one in five women in Uzbekistan who have experienced domestic violence have contemplated suicide.
