Videos circulating on social media show damage to a section of railway along the Zarafshan River in Uzbekistan.

According to the press service of Uzbekistan Railways (O‘zbekiston temir yo‘llari), heavy precipitation in the mountainous regions of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in recent days caused a sharp rise in the water level of the Zarafshan River, leading to bank erosion and changes in the riverbed in some areas.

The incident damaged a section of the Samarkand–Urgut railway line passing through the Taylak district of Samarkand region.

The cause was an increase in water discharge from the usual 80–100 cubic meters per second to 300 cubic meters per second. As a result, the riverbed near the railway widened to 30–40 meters, damaging part of the railway track.

“Such a hydrological situation has not been observed in the last 20 years,” the company noted.

Currently, work is underway to reinforce the riverbanks with large stones, and 15 units of special equipment have been deployed. All necessary measures are being taken to fully restore railway traffic and ensure uninterrupted train movement as soon as possible.
