Authorities in Uzbekistan are investigating the murder of a 22-year-old Indian student from Kerala who was studying at the Bukhara State Medical University.
According to preliminary investigation, the suspect, a native of the Malappuram district in India, allegedly struck the woman fatally with a laptop during a conflict. He has been detained.
After the victim's body was repatriated to India, a second autopsy was conducted in Kerala. The victim's relatives reported numerous injuries on the body and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances of her death. They also claim that the woman was tortured before her death and that the suspect allegedly pressured her to convert to another religion.
Indian law enforcement stated that national legislation allows for the investigation of crimes committed against Indian citizens abroad.
It is noted that if the suspect is prosecuted in Uzbekistan, proceedings in India may be terminated. Otherwise, the investigation will continue in coordination with Uzbek authorities, with assistance from the Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The investigation into the student's death is ongoing both in Uzbekistan and India.
