The authorities of Uzbekistan have confirmed plans to create a massive 'green belt' around the capital Tashkent. By 2045, at least 50 million heat- and drought-resistant trees and shrubs are to be planted there.
The National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change noted that the project was launched on the instructions of the president and is designed for the long term. Its goal is to improve the ecology in Tashkent, reduce dust levels, and expand green areas around the city.
According to the plans, protective forest plantations will cover at least 58,000 hectares. Tree species that tolerate the local climate well and effectively trap dust are being selected. The survival rate of seedlings is expected to be at least 85%.
Work is already underway. In recent years, more than 1.35 million trees have been planted in the capital and surrounding areas. In 2025–2026 alone, new plantings appeared in the Bektemir, Yangihayot, Tashkent, and Kibray districts.
In the near future, the project will be expanded — new green zones will appear in the Yangihayot, Sergeli, and Bektemir districts. A green massif of about 100 hectares will also appear along the Chirchik River.
At the same time, more than 385 hectares have been allocated in Tashkent and the region for botanical and dendrological gardens, and almost 140 hectares for public parks.
The authorities note that the 'green belt' is not just about planting trees. The project includes an irrigation system, ongoing plant care, air monitoring, and protection of territories from construction.
The fate of trees that have grown along roads is being considered separately. Specialists will assess them — if they do not interfere with traffic and meet standards, they will be preserved and included in the overall green infrastructure.
The department reminded of responsibility for illegal cutting or damage to trees — control is carried out by the eco-police, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the National Guard.
Earlier, Uzbekistan updated the procedure for using trees and shrubs not included in the state forest fund: cutting down large trees within the framework of state and major investment projects is possible only by decision of the president. At the same time, the document introduces new rules for transplantation, paid permits, and additional requirements for the care of green spaces.
