The number of students in Uzbekistan has increased nearly fivefold over the past 35 years. While just over 337,000 students were enrolled in higher education institutions in the early 1990s, today that figure has surpassed 1.5 million.

According to the National Statistics Committee, at the start of the 2025/2026 academic year, more than 1.5 million students are studying at Uzbekistan's higher education institutions. This is 1.2 million more than in the 1991/1992 academic year, when there were 337,400 students. Compared to 1991/1992, the indicator has grown almost 4.6 times.

However, growth was uneven. After independence, the number of students decreased significantly: in the 1995/1996 academic year it was 192,100, and in 2000/2001 it reached a minimum of 183,600.

In subsequent years, the figure gradually recovered. In 2005/2006, 278,700 students were enrolled; in 2010/2011, 274,500; and in 2015/2016, 264,300.

Rapid growth began after 2020. In the 2020/2021 academic year, the number of students increased to 571,500. In 2021/2022 it reached 808,400, in 2022/2023 it exceeded 1 million, in 2023/2024 it was 1.3 million, and in 2024/2025 it was 1.4 million.

Earlier it was reported that in some universities in Uzbekistan, there are more than 200 students per teacher.
