The Senate of Uzbekistan has approved changes to the administrative borders in the Samarkand region. According to the document, the territory of Samarkand city will be significantly expanded, while the eponymous district is planned to be abolished.

More than 17,000 hectares of land will be incorporated into Samarkand. Simultaneously, the Samarkand district will be liquidated, and nearly 28,000 hectares of its territory will be transferred to the Taylak district.

Following these changes, the city's population is expected to grow to approximately 880,000 people. This will bring Samarkand closer to the status of a million-plus city and enable the development of new industrial zones, technoparks, and service projects.

It is specifically emphasized that agricultural lands will retain their designation—the category of 6,300 hectares of transferred land will not change. This will allow for the consideration of agricultural interests and the preservation of the region's ecological balance.

The decision was made to develop Samarkand as a major tourist and economic center. The authorities expect that the city's expansion will help alleviate dense construction, improve roads, and create modern infrastructure. Moreover, the changes will make Samarkand more attractive to investors and tourists, as well as create new jobs and improve the living conditions of residents.

Earlier, changes to the borders of Samarkand, Samarkand, and Akdarya districts were reported. After the border changes, the construction of an above-ground metro, roads, bridges, communication tunnels, and the creation of a modern business center are planned.
