In the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan, a young woman was subjected to brutal systematic torture by her husband's relatives. For two months, she was locked in an apartment, starved, forced to drink water from a toilet and eat cockroach poison, and repeatedly doused with boiling water mixed with salt and soda. The human rights project Nemolchi.uz reported the incident based on the account of the victim's father.
According to the father, the victim and her husband married in October 2025, and a daughter was soon born. The young family lived in a rented apartment, but in May 2026 the husband was taken into custody. The motive for the abuse emerged in late June when the woman, during a prison visit, told her husband about his relatives' actions. It turned out that the mother-in-law and sister-in-law had insisted on purchasing a gold item in installments and then pawning it, and had also tried to take out a loan in the daughter-in-law's name to buy a phone, which the bank refused due to existing debt.
The reaction of the husband's relatives was immediate. On the way from the colony, the sister-in-law seized her passport, phone, and the child's birth certificate. On July 6, the relatives rented a separate apartment, forcibly placed the daughter-in-law there, and began systematically taking revenge for what she had told her husband. According to Nemolchi.uz, the victim was fed one piece of bread a day, allowed to use the toilet only once a day, forced to drink water from the toilet and eat cockroach poison. She was beaten alternately and in groups, strangled, hit her head against the wall, and struck in the abdomen and groin area — while the abuse was filmed and accompanied by death threats against the girl and her relatives. The torturers openly told the daughter-in-law that they allegedly had certificates from a psychoneurological dispensary, so they would not face any criminal liability.
On August 29, the abuse became even more sophisticated. One of the sisters-in-law asked the daughter-in-law: "If I pour boiling water on you, will you get burned?" — and immediately doused her with hot water. When the woman tried to tear off her burning clothes, she was dragged into the kitchen and again doused with a prepared solution of boiling water, salt, and soda. The victim managed to escape only on September 6, when the relatives accidentally left the balcony door unlocked. The girl descended from the third floor via the fire escape and asked passersby to call a taxi. After contacting her father, she went with him to the hospital, where she was hospitalized with burns and festering wounds.
The reaction of law enforcement agencies draws particular attention in this story. In response to a request from Nemolchi.uz, the head of the Department for Work with Women of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Nilufar Giyasova, confirmed the initiation of a criminal case under Articles 109 ("Intentional minor bodily injury") and 110 ("Torture") of the Criminal Code. However, the victim's father notes that since September 6, investigators have not contacted him, and the appointment of a forensic medical examination was postponed until the girl's discharge from the hospital. In this regard, the victim's family and the Nemolchi.uz project have appealed to the Prosecutor General's Office of Uzbekistan demanding that the case be taken under personal control, the charges be reclassified to articles with greater liability, and necessary expert actions be carried out.
Earlier, in the Uzun district of the Surkhandarya region, a court sentenced family members to real prison terms for holding a pregnant woman in a livestock shed, systematically beating her, and forcing her to give birth in complete unsanitary conditions. The main defendant in that case received 13 years in prison, and his accomplices received 9 years each.
