A major scientific medical conference dedicated to the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes was held in Tashkent. The event brought together over 500 medical specialists: 250 doctors attended in person in Tashkent, while another 300 specialists from Bukhara, Urgench, Andijan, Namangan, and the Fergana region joined online.
The central theme of the conference was the modern view of obesity as a chronic disease requiring a systematic approach to treatment and long-term patient monitoring. Experts discussed the prevalence of obesity in Uzbekistan, issues of weight control and associated risks, as well as the relationship between obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The event, which included specialists from Uzbekistan and invited experts from Russia, addressed current issues in the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, including the prescription drug based on tirzepatide – Sejaro® by GEROPHARM – previously registered in Uzbekistan. Professor Feruza Khaidarova, Doctor of Medical Sciences and Chair of the Association of Endocrinologists of Uzbekistan, noted: "For us, this is an important event: in July, a tirzepatide-based drug of Russian origin was registered in Uzbekistan. Today, this topic is being discussed by representatives of various medical specialties: not only endocrinologists but also dermatologists, gynecologists, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and cardiologists. This is because the problem of obesity affects different areas of medicine. The modern approach to obesity therapy involves not only weight control but also assessment of disease-related risks and possible complications."
During the scientific program, specialists discussed modern approaches to the treatment of metabolic diseases and the mechanism of action of tirzepatide, which simultaneously acts on GLP-1 and GIP receptors. The conference also reviewed the results of clinical trials of tirzepatide published in specialized scientific literature, including The New England Journal of Medicine. Particular attention was paid to the effect of tirzepatide on visceral fat, which accumulates around internal organs and is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, arterial hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.
The registration of Sejaro® in Uzbekistan was one of the topics of professional discussion. "For GEROPHARM, the registration of Sejaro® is a continuation of long-term work in Uzbekistan and an important step in the development of modern therapy for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Our task is to provide patients with access to effective therapy and, together with the medical community, to develop approaches that allow not only controlling body weight but also reducing the risks of disease-related complications. This involves a full cycle of work with the drug – from development and production to registration and ensuring its availability for patients. We see a high level of trust in our drugs from doctors and patients in Uzbekistan," said Vladimir Skornyakov, Sales Director at GEROPHARM.
The problem of overweight and obesity is becoming increasingly important for Uzbekistan's healthcare system. According to data cited by conference participants with reference to the World Health Organization and the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, 64% of the adult population of the country are overweight, and every fifth adult suffers from obesity. It was also noted that since 1980, the prevalence of obesity in the country has increased by 36%. Obesity is considered a chronic disease and is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular, and other non-communicable diseases.
At the conference, specialists discussed the need for an integrated approach to patient management, which includes weight control, assessment of metabolic risk factors, and prescription of therapy in accordance with clinical indications. Sejaro® is a prescription drug. The decision to prescribe drug therapy is made by a physician based on medical indications and taking into account contraindications.
