President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on October 20 concerning measures to accelerate intensive fish-farming projects and establish energy-efficient lemon-growing greenhouses. The briefing highlighted ongoing efforts to expand agricultural sectors, boost employment, and reduce poverty across the country.
During the presentation, officials emphasized the goal of expanding intensive fish farming to produce up to 1 million tons of fish annually. Strategies to achieve this target were examined using the example of the Balykchi district, where 24 vertical reclamation wells will serve as hubs for integrated complexes covering everything from fingerling and feed supplies to fish cultivation, processing, storage, and retail.
To manage these initiatives within a unified framework, authorities proposed establishing a dedicated fisheries holding company. To replicate the Balykchi model nationwide, an inventory of over 4,000 vertical reclamation wells across the republic is mandated by March 1, 2027, with suitable wells to be transferred to advanced entrepreneurs under public-private partnership agreements.
The second part of the presentation focused on developing lemon cultivation. Plans include constructing energy-efficient greenhouses across 100 hectares in nine makhallas of the Balykchi district and providing them ready-to-use to entrepreneurs. Lemon cultivation, sorting, processing, packaging, storage, and sales will be integrated into a single cooperative chain aimed at engaging unemployed and low-income households.
Concluding the presentation, the head of state issued specific instructions to officials regarding the financial backing of these poverty-reduction projects and the subsidization of training expenses for citizens entering the fish and lemon farming sectors.
