Authorities in Uzbekistan are reportedly seeking to consolidate the rules governing national holidays and professional observances into a single comprehensive law. A draft document outlining these changes has been submitted for public discussion to establish clear guidelines on who can set new dates and how celebrations are funded.
Under the proposed legislation, general and professional holidays would be established by laws, memorable dates by presidential decrees, and international observances by decisions of the Cabinet of Ministers. Key dates such as New Year's Day, Navruz, and Independence Day are slated to remain non-working holidays.
The draft also dedicates a section to professional holidays, covering fields ranging from law enforcement and transport to local community structures and information technology. Organizers will be legally required to ensure public safety, medical services, and compliance with sanitary and fire safety regulations during events.
Funding for the celebrations is expected to come from supplementary local budget revenues, institutional resources, and sponsorship donations, while employers retain the option to issue holiday bonuses. The public debate on the legislative initiative is scheduled to run until November 4.
