On Thursday, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed comprehensive urban development proposals, notably the construction of the new city of Yangi Karshi (New Karshi) and the establishment of a specialized tourist complex along the Karshi Main Canal. These strategic initiatives aim to modernize regional infrastructure and accommodate long-term demographic growth.
The proposed site for the new urban center encompasses 5,200 hectares of vacant and low-productivity pastureland situated between the A-378 Samarkand–Guzar highway and the 4P-79 route leading to Shakhrisabz. Initial master planning estimates that the area will support an initial population of 500,000 residents.
The head of state stressed the importance of visionary planning, stating that the new city must eventually evolve into a major metropolitan hub capable of housing up to 1 million people as a modern extension of Karshi. Plans include relocating the regional administration and other state institutions to the site, alongside constructing convention centers, concert halls, and hotels to host international forums comparable to those held in Samarkand and Bukhara.
Transportation infrastructure was highlighted as a critical component for regional connectivity. The President instructed officials to incorporate efficient public electric transit systems and evaluate the potential implementation of an above-ground metro line linking the local airport and railway station to the new development.
Additionally, authorities reviewed a 235-hectare tourism project along a three-kilometer stretch of the Karshi Main Canal. Scheduled for phased implementation, the zone will feature artisan quarters, hospitality venues, museums, water parks, and an artificial lake designed to boost regional leisure and tourism appeal.
