The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan has announced its plans for the 2024 cotton harvest. According to ministry data, the target is set at 3.5 million tonnes of cotton nationwide, representing a 5% increase compared to last year's figures.
Ministry representative Shavkatjon Rahimov stated at a press conference: "This plan is a result of agricultural reforms and the introduction of modern technologies. We are implementing measures aimed at developing cotton farming and expanding export opportunities." He also emphasized the need for efficient water resource use and adaptation to climate change.
While experts view this plan positively, they warn of some challenges, including outdated irrigation systems and financial difficulties faced by small-scale farmers. Uzbekistan's cotton industry has long held a significant place in the country's economy, but sustainable development may require additional investments.
The implementation of the plan is expected to strengthen Uzbekistan's position in the agricultural products market and boost foreign currency earnings. The ministry plans to assess the results by year-end and set new targets for the coming years.
