Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has promised to keep the maritime artery closed, while other top officials in Tehran warned that oil prices could shoot beyond $200 per barrel. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the strait remains open to international shipping except for vessels belonging to the US and its allies. The strait's geographical vulnerability—just 21 nautical miles wide at its narrowest point—exacerbates the situation, making it a focal point of geopolitical tension.
Trump's proposal faces significant hurdles. US Democratic Senator Chris Murphy claimed on X that the US administration allegedly had no plan to reopen the strait.
