Former US President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on NATO allies, labeling them "cowards" for their failure to support the US-Israel military campaign against Iran, and vowing that this will be "remembered." In a post on his Truth Social platform, he criticized the allies for refusing to join the fight while allegedly complaining about high oil prices.
Trump emphasized that the conflict, initiated by US-Israeli strikes on February 28, has disrupted global markets, resulted in thousands of deaths, and displaced millions. He called on major allies to assist in securing the Iran-controlled Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a simple military maneuver that is purportedly the primary reason for soaring oil prices.
NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed in a statement to AFP that the alliance is "adjusting" its mission in Iraq, following reports of a temporary withdrawal due to the Iran war. Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkewich announced the relocation of all NATO Iraq mission personnel to Europe, thanking Iraq and allies for their assistance.
French President Emmanuel Macron, after a two-day European Union summit in Brussels, stated that defending international law and promoting de-escalation is "the best we can do." He noted that no one expressed a willingness to enter the conflict, highlighting the EU's cautious stance.
The European government meeting in Brussels was dominated by the fallout from the war on Iran, particularly in the energy market. Al Jazeera correspondent Step Vaessen reported that the EU has not reached a consensus on collective measures, amid announcements by the European Central Bank to cut growth forecasts and raise inflation predictions, signaling expected high energy costs in the region.
